Because Newtown Realty understands the importance of school quality as a consideration when purchasing real estate–and finding the right home in which to raise a family–we have compiled a list of exceptional and well-rated schools to help our clients make a well-informed decision. This list is created with information from US News & World Report rankings, ratings from niche.com (which uses surveys, user reviews & public data sources), and in a few cases, our own knowledge of outstanding area schools.
Newtown
Elementary
Hawley Elementary School is located in the center of Newtown and ranks #49 on Niche.com’s list of Best Public Elementary Schools in Connecticut for 2019. Hawley boasts an overall A rating on the site and an A+ for its teachers. The school has 300 students in grades K-4 and a student-teacher ratio of 12 to 1. Hawley has an interesting history as Newtown’s first high school, built by town benefactress Mary Hawley in 1921 and later repurposed as an elementary school.
High School
Newtown High School ranks a very impressive #19 in US News & World Report’s Best High Schools in Connecticut. Enrollment is approximately 1,600 students served by 141 faculty members with a student-teacher ratio of 14 to 1. NHS has an Advanced Placement course participation rate of 63%. The school is known for its exceptional marching band, athletic teams, and dramatic productions among other shining qualities. Newtown High School was awarded the Blue Ribbon Award for schools of excellence in 2000.
Private Schools
Newtown residents have
a varied selection of quality private schools to choose from. They are Fraser-Woods Montessori School for children from age 2 through 8th grade, the Housatonic Valley Waldorf School, and St. Rose of Lima School, both of which serve students from K-8.
Bethel
Bethel High School is ranked #45 in US News & World Report’s Best High Schools in Connecticut. BHS has an enrollment of 871 and a student-teacher ratio of 10 to 1. The AP participation rate is 53%.
Brookfield
Brookfield High School comes in at a notable ranking of #38 for CT in US News & World Report with an enrollment of 856 and a student-teacher ratio of 14 to 1. Students have a 59% AP participation rate.
Monroe
Elementary
Monroe Elementary is rated #65 of niche.com’s Best Public Elementary Schools in Connecticut, with an A rating overall. It serves students K-5.
Fawn Hollow Elementary is ranked #77 with an A overall rating.
High School
Masuk High School in Monroe is ranked #33 in CT by USN&WR. Their enrollment is 1,051 with a student-teacher ratio of 12 to 1 and an AP participation rate of 55%. Masuk was a National Blue Ribbon Schools winner in 2015.
Southbury
Elementary
Gainfield Elementary serves kids K-5 and comes in at #97 in niche.com with an A overall rating.
Pomperaug School ranks #13 of Best Public Elementary Schools in CT, also with an A overall rating.
Oxford
Ranked #60 within CT by USN&WR, Oxford High School has an enrollment of 599 and a student-teacher ratio of 12 to 1.
Redding
Joel Barlow ranks an impressive #18 within Connecticut by USN&WR. Their enrollment is 952 students with a student-teacher ratio of 14 to 1 and an AP enrollment of 60%. Joel Barlow was twice recognized as a Blue Ribbon School of Excellence in 1989 and 1993.
