Sandy Hook

The village of Sandy Hook is located on the eastern end of Newtown, north of Interstate 84. Settled just a year after Newtown’s incorporation, Sandy Hook was originally home to grist and saw mills that harnessed the power of the flowing Pootatuck River.

Sandy Hook is characterized by a quaint town center with its combination of unique stores, brick sidewalks, old-fashioned street lamps, and walking bridges under which the winding Pootatuck River flows. The village at the bottom of the hill is home to a range of eateries that includes fine restaurants, a coffee shop, pub, deli and the Sandy Hook Diner, a local favorite.

There is much more to Sandy Hook, however. This family-centered community includes everything from rolling farmlands to high end homes, and borders parts of the Upper Paugussett State Forest as well as the tranquil Lake Zoar. Residents can swim, play sports and enjoy the playground at Treadwell Park, launch their boats and enjoy the beach at Eichler’s Cove, and gather for the annual Holiday Tree Lighting in Sandy Hook Center. Sandy Hook is also home to Newtown’s Senior Center.
